Online Graduate Degrees

TRANSFERS

Most online universities will accept transfer credits from regionally and nationally accredited institutions of higher learning, if those credits will apply to your degree program of choice.

So with that said, let's say you're sold on the idea of getting your upper-level degree online. Only problem is, you're currently enrolled in another (possibly traditional) school program and need to transfer your credits to complete your next degree level. Transferring credits between majors, or between schools - can be a tricky process. What if, for example, you wanted switch from a Master's in Psychology to meet electives requirements in a different program like a Master's in Education? The variations can be endless.

Good news: The finish line may be closer than you think, whether it's a degree, diploma or certificate. Many schools with online programs, such as Kaplan University, will accept a wide variety of materials to facilitate your credit transfer. It's not always just a transcript - sometimes certification exams, military training and "real-world" experience (documented in essay format) counts for a transfer! To find out what your desired school requires for a transfer, take a close look at both the syllabus of course(s) you want to take, as well as the fine print of the maximum transfer credits allowed between programs and between different schools.

Once you've crossed your T's and dotted your I's, start calling your school's office of registrar to request your official sealed transcripts to be sent directly from current or previous schools to the one you want to transfer to. Meanwhile, be sure to be in contact with admissions or enrollment counselors who have experience with transfers - he or she can assist with course syllabi, class descriptions and guide you through the process - as well as inform you of the school's unique rules and limits on credit transfers.

As you reach the end of the credit transfer process, you should receive confirmation from the university in the mail - in hard-copy, with the university letterhead. Congratulations, you've made the transfer!!
